1.   In early May, U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, reflecting his socially conservative district, introduced a bill to outlaw gay marriages.

2.   Last spring, Gov. Roy Romer, a Democrat, vetoed a bill passed by the Legislature that would have outlawed gay marriages in Colorado.

3.   Same-sex marriage already is outlawed in California.

4.   South Carolina also will look at the institution of marriage, with an initiative to remove the section of the state constitution that outlaws marriages between blacks and whites.
