1.   In early May, U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, reflecting his socially conservative district, introduced a bill to outlaw gay marriages.

2.   Last spring, Gov. Roy Romer, a Democrat, vetoed a bill passed by the Legislature that would have outlawed gay marriages in Colorado.

3.   Same-sex marriage already is outlawed in California.

4.   South Carolina also will look at the institution of marriage, with an initiative to remove the section of the state constitution that outlaws marriages between blacks and whites.

5.   The day before, two-thirds of voters in both Hawaii and Alaska passed constitutional amendments to outlaw gay marriage.

6.   The House overwhelmingly passed a bill Friday to outlaw gay marriage in federal law even if a state decides to allow same-sex couples to marry.

7.   When the case reached the high court, Virginia was not alone in outlawing marriage across racial lines.

8.   It also outlaws homosexual marriages and guarantees the right of religion classes in schools.
