1.   Donor marrow is injected into the patient to create new marrow and a new immune system.

2.   They then inject into the blood new marrow from a compatible donor that contains stem cells, which develop into both blood and immune system cells.

3.   After massive doses of radiation and chemotherapy wiped out the cancerous cells -- but also killed his marrow and immune system -- he received the new marrow.
