1.   Manure runoff from cows, pigs, chickens and other farm animals pollutes twice as many streams and rivers in Washington as all factory outfalls and sewage systems combined.

2.   The nutrients in the manure runoff provide the nourishment for microbes to flourish.

3.   The suit alleges that manure runoff could contaminate drinking water sources, the smell could be offensive and the expansion could drive down property values.

4.   There are few ways for the government to recognize the responsible dairies because there is no mandated monitoring of manure runoff, Jennings said.
