1.   Increased smoking among women and teenagers has offset the decline among men.

2.   Maryland, California and New York also experienced the combination of legal sales declines and increased smoking after raising cigarette taxes.

3.   Similar findings of increased smoking by the young were also released this month by the Federally financed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

4.   The chief reasons are increased smoking, alcohol consumption, drug abuse and unsafe sexual activity.

5.   The recent cigar craze and increased smoking among college students indicate even that appeal may be waning.

6.   But there are signs of increased smoking in poor countries and among teen-agers and young women in several countries, and deaths blamed on smoking still are rising worldwide.
