1.   President Clinton had threatened a veto of the immigration bill if it included the Gallegly amendment.

2.   The House approved a version of the immigration bill with the Gallegly amendment in it.

3.   The House has already approved an immigration bill that includes an amendment sponsored by Rep.

4.   The immigration bill has become a political powder keg for legislators on both sides of the aisle.

5.   Although Feinstein backed off a moratorium, the California Democrat outlined sweeping reforms in an immigration bill she sponsored with Sen. Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican.

6.   And he has said he will veto any immigration bill that denies schooling to the children of illegal immigrants.

7.   At least this particular maneuver would do little harm since the immigration bill is filled with other unacceptable provisions.
