1.   FLIR stands for forward-looking infrared film, which, basically, picks up the heat signatures of objects.

2.   Infrared eyes will help to distinguish real warheads from dummy warheads by reading their heat signatures.

3.   The Iraqi military also flew over facilities, taking pictures of them at infrared wavelengths, to see if any heat signatures would stand out to Western spy satellites.

4.   Infrared sensors can sometimes spot minefields from the air, seeking evidence of ground disturbances or telltale heat signatures given off by buried mines.

5.   Since different materials warm and cool differently during the day, their corresponding heat signatures indicate their composition.
