1.   End grain is not a glue surface.

2.   End grain is involved in each section of the joint, and end grain, of course, is not a viable glue surface.

3.   In fact, liquid chemical compounds that essentially glue weakened stone surfaces together have been around for years.

4.   Jointer planes, of course, are intended chiefly for truing the edges of boards and preparing a good glue surface.

5.   The hand-held biscuit joiners make aligning the work far easier, and their shape gives a great deal more glue surface than dowels.

6.   This gives more glue surface than a dovetail, although the joint has to take all the stress.

7.   This will provide maximum glue surface while eliminating the question of wood movement, which is certainly a crucial concern in this instance.
