1.   Evil has charisma.

2.   Though people are repulsed by it, they also are drawn to its power.

3.   The fact that evil has a history as long as homo sapiens should itself warn one against moralising convulsions.

4.   Evil has such a strong hold on Gollum that he does not have control over his own mind any more.

5.   Evil has his complete attention, but he paints in a fury, obsessed with retribution.

6.   Evil has always had a way of doing that.

7.   Sometimes evil will have its way, even with our children, despite our best efforts.
