1. H antigen was expressed to a varying degree in all biopsy specimens but was weaker in the distal colon. 2. Lewis a expression was seen throughout the colon, while Lewis B was expressed more strongly in the proximal than distal colon. 3. There was no significant difference in percentage of cells in S phase in the distal colon of rats in both diet groups. 4. The proliferative zone, however, was expanded in the distal colon of the higher fibre diet fed rats. 5. The labelling index was higher in the proximal colon than in the distal colon for both groups of rats. 6. It seems logical to study unprepared bowel in an unsedated patient, but this limits studies to the distal colon or requires invasive and time consuming intestinal transtubation. 7. The colon distal to the duodenal anastomosis was dilated and thick-walled, having adapted to the flow of duodenal contents. 8. Less infectious still are the distal colon, nasal mucosa, sciatic nerve, bone marrow, liver, lung, pancreas and thymus gland. |
