1.   Three breakdowns since mid-August had forced cutbacks in rush-hour service while mechanics and pipefitters struggled to put the crippled vessels back in service.

2.   Two cosmonauts performed risky repairs Friday to the damaged Mir space station in an effort to salvage the crippled vessel and restore confidence in the troubled Russian space program.
