1.   As the plants grow, you pull in more soil to cover the stems until the trench is completely filled.

2.   Cover stems with chopped egg.

3.   Some gardeners slit the stems and remove the borers, then cover the stems with soil.

4.   Spray-paint the squash, using masking tape to cover the stems.
