1. A bonus is the side trip down to the canyon floor of Little Yosemite, where Alameda Creek currently has many beautiful pool-and-drop waterfalls. 2. A spur from this trail leads to a Native American cliff dwelling that requires some scrambling to reach, but which is clearly visible from the canyon floor. 3. Cottonwoods, cattails, rushes and lush wild grapevines rise from a small desert spring that flows almost year round from the canyon floor. 4. No vehicles, hikers, bikers, campers or horseback riders will be allowed onto the canyon floor during the road repairs. 5. Residential foundations and leftover walls of a community called Tyuonyi are visible amid undergrowth of the canyon floor. 6. The Navajo tribe, which controls access to the canyon, prohibits almost all unescorted trips to the canyon floor. 7. The road becomes a series of switchbacks with steep dropoffs as it runs to the canyon floor. 8. The trail through the canyon floor is overhung with juniper, pine and manzanita, making this a particularly popular hike on hot days. 9. This past spring, floods washed out a substantial stretch of trail near the bottom, causing a closure of the route to Phantom Ranch on the canyon floor. 10. Traditional Navajo dwellings, the circular hogans, still stand among the willows and cottonwoods of the sandy canyon floor. |
