1.   Bank Negara, the central bank, has bought ringgit on the market twice in the past two weeks to keep it from falling further.

2.   The Malaysian central bank bought ringgit for dollars.

3.   Today, Soros said his firm had actually bought ringgit, betting incorrectly that it would appreciate.

4.   When those dollars are converted, they buy more ringgit.

5.   Dealers contacted by Business Times said they could not ascertain why the Japanese banks are buying the ringgit, or how much greenback was sold.

6.   Foreign and local dealers said, however, that they had not spotted the central bank aggressively buying ringgit.

7.   One dealer said rumours emanating out of Singapore that the Sultan of Brunei had purchased a major landmark property in Kuala Lumpur also saw players scrambling to buy ringgit.

8.   They said operators were buying the ringgit against the Singapore dollar, contributing to its weakness.
