61. In Nigeria, where eye disease is a particular problem, we have provided funding for the building of a number of eye hospitals. 62. This follows a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food that the disease can be transmitted to pigs. 63. The disease is very similar to one which has affected pigs in the US over the last four years. 64. Arrested larvae accumulate during the spring and where Type II disease has been reported it has occurred in late summer or early autumn. 65. The disease is prevalent in temperate areas with high rainfall. 66. Generally only calves during their first grazing season are clinically affected, since on farms where the disease is endemic older animals have a strong acquired immunity. 67. Although outbreaks of chabertiasis have been recorded in goats and sheep in Europe, the disease is more important in the winter rainfall areas of Australasia and South Africa. 68. In endemic areas the disease is most common in dogs under one year old. 69. If the disease is severe, it is advisable to give parenteral iron and to ensure that the dog has a protein-rich-diet. 70. The disease is the second biggest killer of women in this country -- the new treatment could save a thousand lives a year.Russell Trott reports. |
