41.   And in Moscow, Yeltsin pledged to take steps this year to stop dumping radioactive waste in the Japan Sea.

42.   And right next to it is a site designated for low-level radioactive waste.

43.   And of equal danger to the accumulated radioactive waste are the enriched uranium and plutonium from nuclear weapons and nuclear fuel.

44.   Another option, the department says, is to mix the plutonium with highly radioactive waste and embed both in steel canisters filled with glass.

45.   Another is to immobilize the material in glass or a ceramic substance, possibly also mingled with highly radioactive wastes.

46.   Another is to mix the plutonium with molten glass, and possibly with highly radioactive waste as well, so that re-using the material would require complicated chemical reprocessing.

47.   As a result, officials are scrambling to salvage a two-year-old legal case involving a proposed disposal site for low-level radioactive waste.

48.   At Hanford, vast amounts of highly radioactive liquid wastes remain in leaky underground storage tanks, and some of the tanks are potentially explosive.

49.   As with Times Beach, planners will have to convince a skeptical public that they should not worry about climbing a vault of radioactive waste.

50.   Attempts to actually treat the radioactive wastes have come in fits and starts.
