21.   If you use a finish nail, drill a pilot hole through the hardwood first.

22.   If you use wood screws, drill pilot holes first, then counterbore larger holes to recess the screwheads.

23.   If you have to install sheet metal screws, you need to drill pilot holes first.

24.   If you have to nail close to the ends of the board, drill pilot holes first to keep the board from splitting.

25.   In addition to the pilot hole, drill a clearance hole for the screw shank.
