11.   Officially, US soldiers will not join combat operations, but could join patrols in Basilan island and are allowed to fire back if attacked.

12.   The Americans will not be involved in combat but some of them will join Philippine patrols seeking Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in their jungle hideouts.
