1.   Lexis-Nexis joined the stampede to the Web last week, announcing plans for new software that allows subscribers to access its database directly from the Web.

2.   Nearly every major magazine has a companion Web site that lets print subscribers access their accounts.

3.   NextLevel makes cable TV set-top boxes that allow subscribers to access premium cable channels and pay-per-view events.

4.   Subscribers can also access Habitat, a service that allows them to represent themselves in the form of an animated character on-screen and move about in a virtual world.

5.   Subscribers can also access to other financial publications.

6.   The latest version of the system, called WebTV Plus, has added dimensions that allow subscribers to access cable television and the Internet through the same box.

7.   The software does not yet include America Online, but those subscribers can access Personal Touch America through their Internet addresses.

8.   To stay current, these online providers started allowing their subscribers to access the Internet, in addition to the proprietary services they offer.

9.   But other sites that have innocuous addresses but contain undesirable material may well escape the scrutiny of authorities and could be accessed by subscribers, he said.
