1.   Algeria is emerging from a savage war between its military rulers and Islamic guerrilla groups, who singled out journalists and intellectuals and butchered entire villages.

2.   In a period of two weeks, a savage defensive war seemed to have been transformed into a brilliant American victory.

3.   Incontrovertibly however, the U.S. and Japan enjoy the only relationship on the planet whose recent baggage includes a savage war culminating in the use of nuclear weapons.

4.   On the grand scale of things, a bad review is less painful than enduring a savage war, but it still is hideously personal.

5.   Sudan is dominated by Muslim Arabs from the north who for years have made savage war against the black Christians and animists of the south.
