1.   Algeria is emerging from a savage war between its military rulers and Islamic guerrilla groups, who singled out journalists and intellectuals and butchered entire villages.

2.   In a period of two weeks, a savage defensive war seemed to have been transformed into a brilliant American victory.

3.   Incontrovertibly however, the U.S. and Japan enjoy the only relationship on the planet whose recent baggage includes a savage war culminating in the use of nuclear weapons.
