1. The two of us have a planet to ourselves. 2. As far as astronomers know, the stars observed to have single planets may well have many others that have eluded detection. 3. About half of all stars are in pairs, orbiting one another, and astronomers have long wondered whether it was possible for such stellar twins to have planets. 4. But I do wonder if the stars have planets around them, civilizations on them. 5. By searching for this tell-tale wobble, astronomers can identify which stars have planets around them, and even how large the planets are. 6. Many stars may have planets, as the discoveries suggest, but is there a typical pattern? 7. Observations here began last October and have included Epsilon Eridani, one of the Ozma targets, as well as three stars recently discovered to have planets. 8. Some of them have to have planets. 9. That one of the nearest stars has a planet is by itself encouraging to those looking for alien life or even civilizations. 10. What fraction of stars have planets of some kind? |
