1.   A committee formed by the United States and the European Union recommended tighter controls Monday on genetically engineered foods, including mandatory labeling of products with biotech ingredients.

2.   Environmental and consumer groups are pushing the Clinton administration to require the labeling of foods that contain biotech ingredients.

3.   FDA also proposed voluntary labeling guidelines for foods that claim either to be nonbiotech or to have special biotech ingredients.

4.   In Great Britain, some supermarkets are refusing to carry food with biotech ingredients, and activists repeatedly have destroyed seed test plots.

5.   Infant formula, corn chips, veggie burgers and muffin mixes are among the many products known to contain biotech ingredients.

6.   Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department will begin certifying new tests designed to detect the presence of biotech ingredients in food.

7.   She and other biotech critics believe the government should go further and require the labeling of foods containing biotech ingredients, an idea the Clinton administration has rejected.

8.   Spokesmen from Asda, Safeway and United Biscuits, which owns Phileas Fogg, said their products have previously been tested and confirmed free of biotech ingredients.

9.   The agency says there is no justification for labeling food with biotech ingredients that are essentially the same as conventional ones.

10.   The Clinton administration is under pressure from environmental groups to require labeling of foods that contain biotech ingredients.
