1.   He tried the handle but the door was locked.

2.   During the night, the handle was tried at least twice.

3.   Sure enough, when I tried the door handle I managed to set off the car alarm, which if nothing else alarmed me.

4.   The ordinance would allow police to arrest anyone seen trying door handles, looking in cars suspiciously or carrying tools that could be used to break into a vehicle.
