1. FRANCE yesterday said it would plan for possible European Community retaliation against Washington if the US imposed its threatened tariffs on some European luxury products. 2. No wonder the British Foreign Office summoned the US ambassador twice to deliver sharp complaints about the threatened tariffs. 3. Speaking at the White House, U.S. President Bill Clinton said the accord was a victory for consumers in both countries that made the threatened tariffs unnecessary. 4. Part of that decline reflected a halt in shipments of Japanese luxury cars to this country because of threatened punitive tariffs the administration threatened to impose. 5. In Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow on Monday to express concern about the threatened U.S. tariffs on Russian steel imports. 6. Japan has said that if the U.S. proceeds with its threatened tariffs, there will be no immediate retaliation. 7. Talks on avoiding threatened U.S. tariffs for Japanese cars got serious enough Saturday for the two sides to send for their top trade negotiators. 8. The threatened tariffs never went into effect because a deal was reached at the last minute. 9. The trade ministry is expected to meet with auto industry representatives this week in an attempt to find ways to avoid the threatened tariffs. |
