1. The reduced bile acid absorption is likely to reflect damage to the terminal ileal mucosa. 2. Survival curve comparisons showed that colonic disease carried a worse prognosis than terminal ileal disease or mixed site disease. 3. Luminal bile salts inhibit terminal ileal motility and this is independent of PYY release. 4. These results indicated that bile and TDCA inhibited terminal ileal motor activity by a mechanism that was not mediated by PYY, enteroglucagon, or VIP. 5. This study has shown that luminal bile directly inhibited terminal ileal motility. 6. Terminal ileal biopsy specimens were taken at ileocolonoscopy for patients with longstanding quiescent ulcerative colitis and by the ileostomy of two patients who had a colectomy for UC. |
