1.   At this point, the economic damage to crops is so severe that China would save money by curbing sulfur emissions.

2.   Acid rain brought on by sulfur emissions from industrial smokestacks has been a cause of much concern in the Northeast, and rightly so.

3.   Alcoa officials had argued that the high cost of reducing sulfur emissions might force the plant to close.

4.   But the only sure way to get the kind of reduction needed to protect the Adirondacks is to impose a far stricter nationwide cap on sulfur emissions.

9.   The Senate bill would also offer an emissions trading system for nitrogen oxide similar to the scheme that has helped bring down sulfur emissions.

10.   To date, the most ambitious use of tradable permits has been in containing the sulfur emissions from power plants that contribute to acid rain.
