1. Yet so strong was the belief in a static universe that it persisted into the early twentieth century. 2. But their theories of a static universe versus an expanding one seem irrelevant in light of my latest discovery. 3. Einstein conceived of the concept to make his general theory of relativity conform to what was then wrongly believed to be a static universe that is not expanding. 4. Einstein tried to fudge his equation of gravity in order to describe a static universe with no expansion. 5. He did this to make his model of the universe static, with a repulsive lambda-force balancing the attractive force of gravity. 6. Since there was no evidence at the time that the universe was expanding, Einstein looked for a way to reconcile his theory with a static universe. 7. The happy result was a static universe of the type nearly everybody believed they lived in and in which geometry was strictly determined by matter. 8. The joke, of course, is that Einstein did not need a static universe to have a Machian one. |
