2.   At least both sides agree that the fight is generally about reining in spending to save trillions of dollars.

3.   Most families would have spent months saving to buy that washer or to take that European vacation.

4.   Their reasons why range from a lack of new products that shoppers are finding attractive to people are clamping down on spending to save for retirement or college tuition.

5.   Yet, skeptics question why hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to save salmon runs to Idaho.

6.   The rescue efforts have attracted intense international attention, but also substantial criticism for the amount of time and money spent to save an animal.
