1.   In addition, the new handle usually must be cut to length and the end shaped to fit the shovel socket.

2.   Locate the rivet hole in the shovel socket and drill a pilot hole into the handle.

3.   Part of the old handle will be riveted into the shovel socket, so you will have to remove the rivet before you can pull that piece out.

4.   The end of the new handle must be filed to a taper so it can fit into the shovel socket.
