1.   The scare quotes sound the alarm, and so alert readers to the idea that something is deficient or inappropriate about the word being used.

2.   While it is valuable to show your awareness of complexities in the words through which we conceptualise, scare quotes may not be the best way of doing so.

3.   Philosophically, it could be argued in any case that most or all words present analogous difficulties, and need to be put in scare quotes.

4.   So if you start using scare quotes, it may be the words you do not put them round which become the problem.
