1.   If your vine does not bloom in the next two or three years, try root pruning.

2.   In addition to slowing stem growth, root pruning makes room for new soil and new root growth without having to shift a plant to a larger pot.

3.   Occasional root pruning also contributes to the longevity of the bonsai.

4.   Plant the same way you would a bare-root rose, but skip the root pruning.

5.   Plants generally tell us when they need root pruning.

6.   The most foolproof way of telling whether a plant needs root pruning is to slide the root ball out of the pot and examine it.

7.   Trees and shrubs also eventually will need root pruning and repotting.

8.   You can prepare this year by cutting down with a sharp spade where you will be digging next year, a process called root pruning.
