1. Clippings should be left on the lawn so they can decompose and return nutrients to the soil. 2. Fallen trees hold water, return nutrients to the soil and provide food and homes for animals and plants. 3. Much of the dead timber was left standing to shade seedlings and streams, shelter wildlife, give structure to streams and return nutrients to soils. 4. Spot fires return nutrients to the soil, and grasses quickly sprout back. 5. The soil is becoming considerably more acidic, and bacteria and fungi, which return nutrients to the soil, appear to be in decline. |
