3.   The candidates are vying in a historic race to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

4.   The winner will likely face Republican Attorney General John Cornyn in the November race to replace retiring Sen. Phil Gramm.

5.   Also on Friday, military officials said they would activate thousands of reserve officers to replace those retiring because of low wages and lack of housing.

6.   Gormley and Franks are among a field of Republicans running in the June primary to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.
