1.   The polymer solution is separated from the pure solvent by a membrane, permeable only to solvent molecules.

2.   As the molecules sediment, a layer of pure solvent is left whose refractive index differs from the solution.

3.   A solution containing a non-volatile solute is less volatile than the pure solvent.
