1. The use of solar energy to produce hydrogen as a fuel from water has aroused much scientific interest over recent years. 2. Once the hydrogen is produced it can be converted to other fuel forms such as methanol. 3. The easiest method of producing hydrogen from water is by means of electrolysis. 4. However, at present, the economics of using solar-produced electricity to produce hydrogen from water by electrolysis are poor. 5. Environmentalists warn however that the generation of electricity required to produce the hydrogen will still cause pollution. 6. Before its merger, Chrysler considered the novel approach of producing hydrogen on-board by using gasoline. 7. In the procedure a thin semiconductor suspended in water produces hydrogen using only the energy of sunlight. 8. Natural gas mixed with intensely hot steam produces hydrogen. 9. On their own, automakers are testing vehicles that use methanol, petroleum, ethanol and other mixtures to produce hydrogen. |
