1.   Analysts said profit warnings late yesterday by Cabletron Systems Inc. and Seagate Technology Inc. indicate a possible industrywide slowdown.

2.   And analysts noted that the report showed a decline in permits issued for future construction, which suggested a possible slowdown ahead.

3.   And signs of rising inflation or a possible slowdown in the stock market may be drawing more investors to the metal.

4.   Both Seagate Technology Inc., which makes disk drives, and computer network company Cabletron Systems Inc. indicated a possible industrywide slowdown.

5.   A possible further slowdown in earnings has some of the biggest managers in the U.S. spooked, however.

6.   Both companies said they were not worried about the possible economic slowdown in Southeast Asia.

7.   Burton Greenwald, an industry consultant based in Philadelphia, said other factors pointed to a possible slowdown in mutual fund growth.

8.   But she said beyond Asia, a major reason for the possible slowdown may be the higher cost of labor.

9.   Consumer spending had slowed some and a large buildup in inventories developed during the second quarter, signaling a possible slowdown that might make a rate increase unnecessary.

10.   Dell also was downgraded by Salomon SmithBarney analyst Richard Gardner because of concern over a possible slowdown in small-business sales and continued weakness in Europe.
