1. Bowing to market pressure, the Bank of Thailand scrapped its system of pegging the baht to a basket of currencies dominated by the U.S. dollar. 2. For much of that time, the policy of pegging the baht to a basket of currencies -- mostly the dollar -- helped ensure the currency remained stable. 3. Higher U.S. interest rates would likely keep Thai rates close to a four-year high as the baht is pegged to the dollar. 4. Thailand also spent billions of dollars to keep the baht pegged to a dollar-based basket of currencies this spring. 5. Thailand eventually had to abandon its policy of pegging the baht to a basket of currencies, primarily the dollar. 6. Time and again, Bangkok said it will keep the baht pegged to a basket of currencies -- mostly the dollar -- to insure the Thai currency remains stable. 7. The attempt at rapid financial liberalisation caused massive inflows of foreign capital into the country while the baht was still pegged to the dollar. 8. Thai Finance Minister Amnuay Virawan said Tuesday that the basket of currencies against which the baht is pegged would not require adjustment, despite the surging US dollar. |
