1.   Close and drain the parts of the plumbing system that are vulnerable to the cold like pipes supplying water to outside faucets.

2.   Repair any leaking plumbing and outside faucets.

3.   Shut each of these off from inside the basement, then open the outside faucet to drain some of the water.

4.   Shut each off from inside, then open the outside faucet to drain some of the water.

5.   The hose extension can be emptied and secured in winter, just as your outside faucet is.

6.   Usually it takes just turning the handle and opening the outside faucet so water can drain out.
