1.   By fall, Barr was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition likely caused by her arm injury.

2.   She gave up swimming again after she was diagnosed later that year with thoracic outlet syndrome, which causes intense pain and led to the removal of a lung.

3.   The condition, known as thoracic outlet syndrome, is caused by the first rib in the shoulder pinching the muscle and blocking the artery.

4.   Those disorders include carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist, cubital tunnel syndrome in the elbow and thoracic outlet syndrome in the chest and shoulder.
