1. In the form here, the inner surfaces of the outer petals are the most perfect white, the whole of the three inner petals the same colour. 2. As the cells in the flower buds expand, they press on the bud scales, the outer petals. 3. For baby artichokes, bend back the lower, outer petals until they snap off easily near the base. 4. The backs of the outer petals are washed over in greeny-buff, so in bud it looks very sober. 5. The outer petals need to be removed and the spikes and top have to be trimmed. 6. These are distinguished by their relatively diminutive height and their outer petals, which flare back like an umbrella in a strong wind. |
