1.   The only really satisfactory way of repairing the damage is to remove the old finish and then treat the burnt area.

2.   Apply the remover, let it soak into the niches and nooks, then scrub out the old finish with an old toothbrush.

4.   A. Stickiness sometimes happens on old finishes, and no one that I know of has a real answer.

5.   A. Sand the finish heavily, or at least enough to reduce the gloss of the old finish, and to roughen it a bit.

7.   After sanding, clean with paint thinner and apply a stain to match the old finish.

8.   All the old finish must be removed for the semitransparent stain to penetrate.

9.   All you have to do is sand the old finish thoroughly to remove all gloss, then apply the flat varnish directly over the existing finish.

10.   But since the old finish is so dark, it might ghost through the undercoater.
