1.   At the same time the enterotoxin also promotes a net secretion of chloride ions into the gut lumen from the epithelial cells.

2.   We found no correlation between net secretion of water and electrolytes in the test segment and stool weight while liquid bowel movements were present after the experiment.

3.   In secreting intestine all the solutions reversed net secretion to net absorption but all three hypotonic ORS promoted more water absorption than WHO-ORS and UK-ORS.

4.   Net secretion of potassium increased in acute diarrhoea, and did not change in the presence of SCFA.

5.   Net secretion of potassium into the lumen was significantly increased in acute diarrhoea and was unchanged by the presence of luminal SCFA.

6.   Radioactive tracer studies suggested that the increase in the SCC reflected a change in sodium and chloride transport from net absorption to net secretion.

7.   These observations suggest that an acute bacterial inflammation evokes a more pronounced intestinal net fluid secretion than the inflammation caused by Nippostrongylus brasiliensis.
