1.   An Impressionist-style portrait of an anonymous young woman with knowing eyes almost overwhelmed Mailer.

2.   Against a snowy white gouache ground floats a long rectangle with a single knowing eye in it, her eye.

3.   Almost unfailingly, that knowing eye anticipates the next highlighted voice.

4.   But for the knowing eye, there is a dead giveaway.

5.   But it is a subtle sort of appeal that resides somewhere in the corners of her mouth and her knowing eyes.
