2.   The student poems were all inspired by personal experiences, some about growing up without a father, others about depression, still others about abuse.

3.   They, in turn, inspired poems by the French Surrealist Paul Eluard.

4.   The poem was inspired by the death of Lieut. Alexis Helmer, an Ottawan who was killed during the second battle of Ypres in Belgium.
