1. Examples include patients with chronic infections, inflammation, malignancies, and liver disease. 2. The third group includes patients who mutilate themselves, usually in the context of a serious psychiatric illness. 3. We elected to include this patient in the study since the entire remaining right colon had active ulcerative colitis. 4. All four patients who developed this sequence of biopsy changes died, including one patient in whom this pattern occurred in two allografts. 5. In particular, they do not include patients who died or were lost to follow up in the prolonged interval between treatment and the onset of symptoms. 6. This included six patients in whom achalasia had been suspected on the basis of barium studies but in whom manometry was normal. 7.
