1. Autumn Joy blooms begin as tight green buds resembling broccoli that become pink, rounded flower clusters. 2. But come frost, they turn a coppery brown and fall from the twiggy branches only when pushed off by the new pale green buds of spring. 3. Each flower begins as an odd, curled, C-shaped green bud. 4. Last season we fought off a harsh late freeze that turned the first delicate green buds to brown in early May. 5. Their brilliant satin petals bursting from swollen green buds, the camellias at the historic Lyman Estate greenhouse seem as miraculous as an early spring. 6. Their pale green buds appeared supercharged, nearly fluorescent, in striking contrast to the opaque black surface of the river at this place called Bouchoux Brook. |
