1.   Gaseous distension of the bowel causes considerable discomfort to the patient and increases transmural pressure.

2.   A plain abdominal radiograph showed gaseous distension of the transverse colon with mucosal oedema.

3.   Therefore, it is possible that relief of gaseous distension may have some influence on a surgical decision.
