1. As always, the sound of Ellington played by a full orchestra is a revelation, an entirely different experience than hearing it on disk. 2. A full orchestra, heavy on strings. 3. A string quartet and a piano serve as stand-ins for a full orchestra. 4. Conducting, especially when a full orchestra comes into play, is a whole other discipline, one that Shaw took pains to master as few others have. 5. Finally, after a tremendous buildup in the full orchestra, it works. 6. For Jessye Norman to sing a Schubert song in Carnegie Hall is every bit as much an act of transcription as Stokowski arranging Bach for full orchestra. 7. Full orchestras can crowd themselves on stage at Tully, and the acoustical space handles them acceptably. 8. His quietest notes were riveting, even in the face of a full orchestra playing behind him. 9. If a cult show is a musical, the music is furnished by a small combo rather than a full orchestra. 10. Maybe this piece could be fabulous as a piece for full orchestra. |
