1.   If the water stops it means that the flush valve is not seating properly.

2.   Know how to replace the flush valve and clean out the water jet under the rim of the toilet.

3.   Possibly, there is a flush valve in your toilet allowing a small amount of water to drain from the tank.

4.   The flush valve is the hole at the bottom of the tank at the back of the toilet.

5.   Tripping the handle on the tank opens the flush valve, either a flapper valve or a tank ball, at the bottom of the tank.

6.   When the tank is empty the flush valve closes and a supply valve, a ballcock, allows fresh water to refill the tank.

7.   You should use a fresh rubber gasket where the flush valve connects to the bowl.
