1.   A Senate version of the bill, passed last May, differs from the House bill in some respects, including the exemption for encryption research.

2.   Critics contend the copyright law is too far-reaching because it restricts activities that are not directly related to actual copying of protected material, such as encryption research.

3.   EFF legal director Cindy Cohn said at the press conference that there is an exception for encryption research, but it is inadequate.

4.   Senate leaders said they still hoped to reach a compromise on the issue of encryption research.
