1.   Designated wilderness areas have been altered by the creation of unauthorized trails and paths, damaging cactus and other sensitive vegetation and displacing wildlife.

2.   Nearly all of the Greyfield Tract is in a congressionally designated wilderness area and would become part of the national seashore managed by the National Park Service.

3.   The bill also would also allow vehicles to drive through this designated wilderness area.

4.   The Bush administration could not unilaterally open up designated wilderness areas to oil and gas exploration, said Rem Hawes, a spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management.

5.   The major exceptions are the Pacific Crest Trail and those within designated wilderness areas, which are open only to hikers.

6.   The U.S. Forest Service says it warned him four years ago that snowmobiling in designated wilderness areas is illegal.

7.   There are existing oil and gas leases on designated wilderness areas that could be reactivated by the administration, he said.

8.   The bill also requires an inventory of all federal lands, except for national parks and designated wilderness areas, for expanded coal and other energy development.

9.   The federal Wilderness Act bans use of motor vehicles in designated wilderness areas.
